All of our filter kits, systems are equipped with both mechanical filtration and biological filtration. The mechanical filtration component in our kilter kits utilizes coarse sponges to trap and hold debris that is pulled in by the pump. Mechanical filtration is best for the removal of larger waste particles. The biological filtration involves the use of benefecial microorganisms or bacteria to biologically degrade and break down waste and also convert toxic ammonia into less harmful nitrite and then eventually nitrate. In our kits there are seperate chambers where these microorganisms colonize and as the water passes through them, they filter out the waste that was not captured by the mechanical filter.
